Sinopsis
(Venevisión
Internacional)
Symbolizing the heart's
movements, the 35 stories in "Diastole and Systole" show how stupid middle
class relationships can be in one of Colombia's contemporary cities. Each
story lasts approximately two to three minutes. The main characters in this
tragicomedy are almost always the same two people: Marcela Carvajal and
Nicolas Montero. These two young individuals show us their inner selves. They
experience exactly the same that we all do: fear, social climbing, frivolity,
intolerance, bad luck, misunderstandings, ambiguity, lack of understanding of
your partner and of others, selfishness, indifference, loneliness, maternal
dependency, arrogance, jealousy, infidelity, and lack of desire to love…The
main characters and the five beings around them, live as if their life didn't
have a past, as if they were not a part of a very unfair and conflictive
society. They have neither names nor families, nor do they have any intentions
of creating a family of their own. The other five characters are a
transvestite friend (Ramiro Meneses), a promiscuous and manipulative ex-fiancé
(Adriana Ricardo), a disloyal coworker (Luis Mesa), a sought-after but
bisexual lover (Henry Castillo), and (Jaime Correa) who shines shoes, watches
cars in a parking lot, waits tables at a local bar, works as a courier for an
advertising agency and is a corrupt minister as well.
The 35 stories are divided into three major groups: the beginning of a "love"
affair, the strengthening of the couple, and finally, its breakdown. All
snippets have their own titles (as in silent movies). For instance, "Don't
start at the End", "All men are equal…and women, too", "Friends are above it
all, including your own wife", "Love is like Cancer, you have to spot it on
time", "Love is a habit that you can also get out of"…
