Sinopsis
(All Movie Guide)
Wayne Kramer's debut film is, at
its core, a touching two-hander about damaged, middle-aged people -- played
with an appealing, frank simplicity by Maria Bello and William H. Macy --
finding each other amidst the barren moral wasteland of Las Vegas.
Unfortunately, Kramer muddies up what could've been a low-key character study
with sub-Mamet, hard-boiled dialogue, a "passing of an era" theme, and enough
red-herring subplots for three would-be noirs. It's what would've happened if
Mike Figgis decided that Julian Sands' smarmy pimp character was the most
important element of Leaving Las Vegas. The Cooler's hook -- that a man could
make a career out of his unluckiness -- is appealing, but the forces that
contrive to bring down the luckless Bernie (Macy) ultimately serve to distract
the audience from his revelatory (not to mention highly carnal) relationship
with the dim-but-knowing Natalie (Bello). Between the two of them, the
performers could've delivered a relationship drama on par with Figgis' film,
or even Louis Malle's transcendental Atlantic City. As it is, however, The
Cooler is stuck halfway between touching, contemplative romance and
straight-to-cable purgatory. --
